Palencia (Cerrato)

The Monastery of San Pelayo de Cerrato is located just 2 kilometers from the town of Cevico Navero, in the Cerrato region, in the southeast corner of the province of Palencia. The Cerrato region of Palencia receives its name from the hills that form the undulating landscape, with limestone moors and green plains crossed by rivers such as the Pisuerga and the Arlanza and some stretches of the Canal de Castilla. A region in which the traveler has endless cultural, sporting, gastronomic, nature, and landscape possibilities for a getaway.

Cerrato means speaking about the popular architecture, wineries, Baltanás and Torquemada. The Cerrato Museum in the town of Baltanás can be a good starting point to familiarise yourself with this land, to take the necessary documentation to explore the paths and trails, and discover its treasures. Talking about Cerrato also means talking about Enogastronomy, with capital letters, good wine, lamb churro, excellent cheeses, breads and pastries, and star products of the Palencia orchard, such as Torquemada Peppers or Palenzuela Onions.

Baños de Cerrato shows us the Basilica of San Juan. This pre-Romanesque basilica is considered the oldest church in Spain. There are also Dueñas, which date from the rise of vineyards. That is why there are so many constructions of this type in city areas.

The capital of Palencia is 40 km away. It has a rich history dating back to Roman times and it played an important role in the medieval period as part of the Kingdom of León
